Khane Ki Dua: Duas Before and After Eating

Khane ki dua is one of the first duas Muslim parents teach their children, and one of the easiest to turn into a habit. A short Bismillah before the first bite, and an Alhamdulillah after the last one. These two small words, repeated at every meal, teach a child that food is a gift from Allah and that gratitude is part of eating. The Prophet ﷺ taught us exact words for both moments. They are short, authentic, and easy enough for a three-year-old to memorise. In this post you will find the dua before eating, what to say if you forget Bismillah, the dua after eating, and simple tips to help your children remember all three.

The dua before eating: Bismillah

The Prophet ﷺ said: "When any one of you eats, let him mention the name of Allah" (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1858). That is why we begin every meal with Bismillah — in the name of Allah. It is a short word, but it changes the whole meal: we eat as guests of Allah's blessing, not only to fill our stomachs.

There is another reason the Prophet ﷺ gave. He told us that the devil considers food lawful for himself when the name of Allah is not mentioned over it (Sahih Muslim 2017). Saying Bismillah keeps our food blessed and protected.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ

ترجمہ: اللہ کے نام کے ساتھ۔

In the name of Allah.

Jami' at-Tirmidhi 1858 · said before eating

Teach children to say it before the very first bite or sip — even before tasting to check whether the food is hot.

Forgot Bismillah? Say this dua

Children forget, and adults forget too. The good news is that the Prophet ﷺ gave us a fix for exactly this moment: "When any of you eats and forgets to mention Allah's name at the beginning, let him say: Bismillahi fi awwalihi wa aakhirihi" (Sunan Abi Dawood 3767).

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ فِي أَوَّلِهِ وَآخِرِهِ

ترجمہ: اللہ کے نام سے، اس کے شروع میں بھی اور آخر میں بھی۔

In the name of Allah, at its beginning and at its end.

Sunan Abi Dawood 3767 · said when Bismillah was forgotten

This means that even in the middle of the meal, we can still get the blessing. Parents can make this a family rule: if anyone remembers late, everyone says it together with a smile. No scolding — just a gentle reminder.

The dua after eating: Alhamdulillah

When the meal is finished, we thank Allah. The Prophet ﷺ taught a beautiful after-meal dua, and he gave glad tidings that whoever eats food and says it has his past sins forgiven (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3458, graded hasan).

All praise is for Allah, who fed me this and provided it for me, without any power or might of my own.

Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3458 · said after eating

The Prophet ﷺ would also praise Allah at length when the meal was finished and the table was lifted (Sahih al-Bukhari 5458). The short dua above is enough for children to learn first.

A bonus dua: when drinking milk

There is a special dua for milk. The Prophet ﷺ said that when one of you is given milk to drink, he should say (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3455):

اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَنَا فِيهِ وَزِدْنَا مِنْهُ

ترجمہ: اے اللہ! ہمارے لیے اس میں برکت دے اور ہمیں اس سے مزید عطا فرما۔

O Allah, bless it for us and give us more of it.

Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3455 · said when drinking milk

Most children drink milk every day, so this small dua gets repeated often and is memorised quickly.

Teaching khane ki dua to children

  • Say it out loud. Children copy what they hear. Say Bismillah clearly before every meal until they say it on their own.
  • One dua at a time. Start with Bismillah for a week. Add the after-meal dua next, then the "forgot" dua.
  • Use a fridge chart. A star for every meal they remember. Small rewards keep small children motivated.
  • Remind, don't scold. If they forget, smile and say it with them. Forgetting is the perfect moment to teach the "forgot" dua.
  • Explain simply. Tell them: Allah gave us this food, so we say His name before eating and thank Him after.
  • Repeat at every meal. Breakfast and snacks count too — not only dinner. Repetition is what turns the dua into a lifelong habit.
