Tajweed Course: Learn to Recite the Quran Correctly

Tajweed is the set of rules for reciting the Quran the way it was revealed. Our Tajweed course teaches the rules step by step and, more importantly, practises them until they become natural in your recitation.

What is Tajweed?

The word Tajweed (تجوید) comes from the Arabic root meaning "to make better". In recitation it means giving every letter its right: its correct point of articulation (makhraj), its qualities (sifaat), and the rules that apply when letters meet. Reading with Tajweed protects the meaning of the Quran, because a small change in a letter can change a word.

What the student will learn

  • MakharijThe 17 points of articulation in the throat, tongue, lips and nose.
  • SifaatHeavy and light letters, and the qualities that separate similar sounds.
  • Noon Sakin & TanweenIzhar, Idgham, Iqlab and Ikhfa, the four core rules.
  • Meem SakinIkhfa Shafawi, Idgham Shafawi and Izhar Shafawi.
  • MaddNatural and extended lengths, and when each applies.
  • Qalqalah & GhunnahThe echo letters and the nasal sound held for two counts.
  • Laam rulesShamsi and Qamari letters, and the Laam in the name of Allah.
  • WaqfStopping signs and how to stop and restart correctly.

Practice, not just theory

Learning the names of the rules is the easy part. The real work is hearing them in your own recitation. In every class you recite to the teacher, who points out exactly which rule was missed and has you read it again. Many students are surprised how many small habits they had picked up over the years.

Who is this course for?

  • Adults who read the Quran but want to correct their recitation.
  • Students who have completed Nazra and want to go deeper.
  • Hifz students who want to strengthen their recitation alongside memorisation.
